Thierry Henry is reportedly the favourite to assume the vacant France U21s managerial post.

The football legend and popular CBS Sports pundit was interviewed for the role on Monday and is understood to be the leader out of four candidates.

France’s Football Association sacked U21s manager Sylvain Ripoll at the end of July after six years in charge, having most recently crashed out to Ukraine in the quarter-finals of the U21s Euros.

Now, Henry is the preferred candidate of the French Ministry of Sports ahead of Sabri Lamouchi, Jocelyn Gourvennec, and Julien Stephan, according to L’Equipe.

His first tournament in the role would be the 2024 Olympics in Paris, with the French Government’s sporting department wanting a major ‘name’ in charge.

After a stellar career in the game, Henry’s stock among the younger generation was skyrocketed due to his social-media friendly work with CBS Sports, where he has been an analyst for their Champions League coverage since September 2021.

Alongside host Kate Abdo, Jamie Carragher, and Micah Richards, he makes up a formidable four who have taken the internet by storm with amusing soundbites and  teasing.

His managerial credentials are less certain. Across two roles with Monaco and Montreal Impact, his win percentage is just 26.5 per cent.

He has also been Belgium’s assistant manager twice, helping them finish third at the 2018 World Cup under Roberto Martinez as a highlight. The 45-year-old left that role earlier in 2022 and was keen to return to management, even discussing taking the national job with Belgian Football Federation CEO Peter Bossaert.
