Megan Rapinoe has said that those who celebrated her career-ending Achilles injury occupy a ‘special place in hell.’

The controversial Rapinoe, 38, suffered the injury just three minutes into the NWSL Championship game in November, limping off the field as her OL Reign went on to lose to Gotham FC.

And speaking a few months removed from that heartbreaking finish to her career, she took a shot at those who reveled in her misery.

‘It is sad, like I wish that didn’t happen. I’m just thinking about my teammates coming over, of course it’s sad. … it’s kinda just life,’ she began on ‘Pablo Torre Finds Out.’

‘We want these perfect stories and I’m a controversial figure, and having people celebrate it – but then also be so disingenuous about it, that that part is kinda funny too. I’m like, wow you guys are in a special place in hell that you’re celebrating this.

After the game, which the Reign lost 1-0, Rapinoe joked that her injury was proof that there wasn’t a God.

The comment unsurprisingly angered religious people, though Rapinoe claims that they ‘missed the whole joke.’

‘Somebody needs to check on the Christians, they’re not OK,’ she said, recalling the backlash she received. ‘They also missed the whole joke.’

‘Don’t act like you’re surprised by me making this joke about what happened, or finding a dig. I’m like, yeah, I’m gonna find a funny dig. Who’s it at? God, myself, religion, the world? I don’t know.’

Host Torre then said, ‘The dig is, here is yet another athlete who thinks that proof of God is found in them winning, and good s*** happening. And if it doesn’t, then obviously God does not exist. That’s the joke.’ Rapinoe agreed with his assessment.

The winger was seen laughing and smiling after the miss, which angered many fans.

‘There are so many more important things than this, and of course it’s sad,’ she told Torre of the way her career ended. ‘I don’t think it takes anything away from my career, I don’t think missing that penalty takes anything away from my career – it’s actually all part of it. And if you don’t try you’re never gonna do anything.’

Rapinoe later said that the reaction to her penalty miss was ‘like a sick, sick joke. I’ve never hit it over, when I miss they are saved. That’s why I had that smile on my face.

‘I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be f***ing kidding me.’ I’m going to miss a penalty? I mean, honestly, I can’t remember the last time I missed.’
