The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

It comes just 17 days after he scored a touchdown for the Chiefs in their 25-22 Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

The decision to cut Valdes-Scantling will reportedly save the Chiefs $12million on their salary cap.

The 29-year-old has been in Kansas City for two seasons. He had previously spent four in Green Bay after the Packers drafted him in 2018.

Valdes-Scantling won two Super Bowl rings in Kansas City but was part of a receiving group that struggled for Patrick Mahomes last season.

He managed just 21 receptions for 315 yards in the regular season, scoring one touchdown over 16 games.

In the postseason he reeled in eight catches for 128 yards and one touchdown, which arrived when the Chiefs needed a score in the Super Bowl.

A crucial blunder by San Francisco’s special teams set up Mahomes’ 16-yard pass to Valdes-Scantling for a 13-10 lead.

Later on, he also came up with a play to keep the team’s overtime drive alive.

Facing a key fourth-down that the Chiefs had to convert in order to stay in the game, Mahomes was able to rush for eight yards to get a first down to keep going.

As for how he arrived on that play, Mahomes told ‘The Peter King Podcast’ that during a timeout, the receiver known as MVS suggested a setup that could make the QB mobile if he needed to run.

‘Yeah, I wish I could take all the credit, but it was kind of crazy,’ Mahomes said.

‘So, we were going through our plays, we were trying to decide if we were going to run or pass, and we had a couple of run plays kind of dialed up.

‘We had already had a lot of short-yardage situations in the game and we were trying to find that perfect play.

‘So I was thinking of passes because I wanted to pass it, obviously, and have the ball in my hand. It was actually MVS that came up to the huddle on the side and kind of said, “Hey, let’s go Slide Keys.” Which is wild because it’s not really a play designed for him, it’s a play designed for Travis (Kelce) and Rashee (Rice).

‘When he said it, it clicked for me, I was like, “That’s it. That’s perfect”.’
