Inter Milan are Serie A champions are for the 20th time after they beat their city rivals AC Milan in an ill-tempered match at the San Siro. 

Simone Inzaghi’s side needed a win to ensure the title, and they looked like they were on their way to a comfortable three points after goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram.

AC Milan though made it nervy for their bitter rivals after Fikayo Tomori scored with ten minutes plus stoppage time remaining.

The game ended in chaos with three players sent off in the space of four stoppage-time minutes.

 At the final whistle, Inzaghi burst onto the pitch to celebrate with his coaching staff and players.

Lautaro Martinez was left in tears as he dropped to the ground, as his team-mates hugged and celebrated in front of the fans.  

The players then brought out signs with the number ’20’ on it to celebrate their historic title triumph – which moves them one point AC Milan, but still 16 behind Juventus.

However, the club will get a second star on their kit, as Italian clubs get a star for every ten league titles that they win.

It is Inzaghi’s first Scudetto of his coaching career, and his side were top of the table for almost the entire season. 

Inter took the lead in the 18th minute when Benjamin Pavard nodded on Federico Dimarco’s corner for Acerbi to head in from close range.

Thuram then drilled in the from the edge of the area into the bottom corner to give Inter a comfortable lead.

AC Milan were desperate to not be the side that their rivals won the title against and picked up the intensity in the final stages once Tomori headed in a rebound.

Tempers began to flare with AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Inter defender Denzel Dumfries sent off following a scuffle.

AC Milan’s Davide Calabria was also shown a red card for violent conduct after he caught an opponent with an elbow while waiting for a corner to come in. 

It has been a disappointing week for AC Milan, who were confronted by the club’s ultras after they were knocked out of the Europa League to Italian rivals Roma mid-week. 

There have been reports that manager Stefano Pioli could be replaced at the end of the season.

Following the loss to Inter, he addressed the rumours as he said: ‘I don’t know. Inzaghi seemed to be struggling 14 months ago according to the media and look what he achieved after that. I am happy here, I work well and I think the team has margin for improvement.

‘We’ll see where we all are at the end of the season and discuss it.’
