Horrific freak accident kills teacher and injures five children at Texas Montessori school

A Texas teacher was killed and five students were injured at a daycare after a parent drove into a fence and crashed into the school.

Alexia Rosales, 22, of San Antonio, passed away with a student cradled in her arms at Excelled Montessori Plus Daycare Preschool in Scenic Oaks on Thursday.

‘[She was] protecting the baby,’ her mother, Berenice, told DailyMail.com of Alexia, who was trapped underneath the car, while sobbing on Friday. ‘You can tell she was a teacher from the heart.

‘[The students] love her so much, they always wanted to be around her.’

She and another teacher Alicia, 23, who asked to go by her first name, had taken five or six students outside to play after the holiday performance around 4pm when a mother suffered a medical episode while picking up her kids.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said a parent was loading her kids into the vehicle when ‘for whatever reason, she accelerated into another car,’ he said at a press conference.

‘She, in turn, pushed that other car, and then both cars ended up hitting a fence,’ he said.

Alexia and at least one of the students were pinned under the car for ‘some time,’ the sheriff and Alicia said, and the fire department had to use a hydraulic lift to remove the vehicle from the victims.

Alicia was pinned under the gate and was able to hand some of the children to others. The ‘babies were okay,’ she told DailyMail.com.

‘We were outside playing with the kids, and next thing I know, I was looking up at the sky,’ she said.

Police do not believe the driver was under the influence and she does have past medical conditions that ‘may have contributed to this,’ according to Salazar.

‘At this point we don’t believe it has anything to do with intoxication or any sort of criminality,’ he said.

A school spokesperson told KSAT 12 that the mother suffered a medical episode and hit the gas while in reverse, causing her to plow into the other car and into the fence.

Salazar does not expect criminal charges to be filed against the driver.

The five students, Alexia, and Alicia were taken to the hospital with ‘various level of injuries,’ Salazar said.

Alicia, who was not trapped under the car, told DailyMail.com that she had to receive 12 stitches on her forehead where she had a gash so deep it went ‘all the way to the skull.’

The Rosales family told DailyMail.com that they have not been allowed to see their daughter’s body since her death yesterday.

‘They didn’t let me see her,’ Berenice recalled. She and her husband, Carlos, went to the hospital to identify her, but they claimed they were turned away.

‘I don’t even know if it’s her,’ Berenice sobbed. ‘How do I know if it’s her?

‘Why don’t they let us identify her as her parents?’

Berenice and Carlos said they were told they could not see Alexia’s body until it arrived at a funeral home.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office told DailyMail.com on Friday that an autopsy has not been completed yet and said it was procedure not to allow loved ones to see the bodies.

‘It’s our procedure, they can’t see them in our facility,’ a spokesperson said over the phone.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office told DailyMail.com they could not comment on why the family was not allowed to see the body, but said: ‘The body was visually identified on site by the school owner.

‘Once the medical examiner’s office concludes the investigation, the body can be released for funeral arrangements.’

Rosales’ family remember their bright daughter as angelic and someone who loved her job and her students.

‘She was an angel, she never gave me any problems,’ her mother said. ‘All she did was study and work… She was born to be a teacher.’

Despite her family’s worries she wouldn’t get paid enough working in education, she continued forward with her students.

‘She loved [it] since she was little,’ Carlos said.

She would come home to her parents and tell stories about the kids, and although she was tired, her mother said she was ‘happy.’

Alexia was also finishing up her degree and was stressing about finals while working part-time at the daycare. She was nearly done with the semester – finishing with all As and Bs, her parents said.

She was due to graduate next year.

They also remember their daughter kindness and said she was a ‘simple’ person who always care about everyone and was family-oriented.

The last thing Berenice recalled her daughter saying to her was ‘I love you, mom’ as she left for the day on Thursday morning.

Their family from Arizona – whom they were supposed to spend New Year’s with – are currently traveling in to be with them ahead of the Christmas holiday.

The school remembered the teacher as a ‘bright light in all our lives.’

‘Her smile, laughter, and boundless love for the children and everyone around her made our school feel like a second home,’ it said in a statement.

‘Her impact on our community is immeasurable, and her absence leaves a hole in our hearts. As we grieve, we want to come together to support her family in this incredibly difficult time.’

The school has set up a GoFundMe to help the family.

The fundraiser has garnered nearly $2,000 toward its $10,000 goal in an hour.
