Gareth Southgate says he will not speak to any club about a potential next job while he is still manager of England.

The Three Lions boss has been linked with Manchester United in recent days and, with his FA contract expiring in December, his future is uncertain.

But Southgate, when pressed on what happens next for him, said: ‘My focus is the European Championship. If we did something, a contract here before, everyone would be saying, “Why are you signing a contract before a Euros where you’ve got to prove yourself?”.

‘I’m certainly not going to speak to anybody else ahead of that. I never have. I’ve been eight years in the job. I wouldn’t entertain speaking to anybody else when I’m in a job.’

If England make the final of Euro 2024, that would mean potential suitors having to wait until the middle of the July at the earliest before speaking to Southgate.

Pushed specifically on replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford this summer, Southgate – addressing the media at Tottenham’s training ground on Friday night – said: ‘There are two things from my point of view. Firstly, I am the England manager and I have got one job, basically, to try and deliver a European Championship.

‘Clearly, before that, two important games this week. And the second thing is, Manchester United have a manager. I think it is always completely disrespectful when there is any speculation about a manager who is in place. I am president of the LMA, so I don’t have any time for that sort of thing.’

Meanwhile, Southgate has revealed that Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer will miss Saturday’s friendly against Brazil at Wembley. Given Bukayo Saka has already left the camp, it raises the possibility of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon being handed a full debut.
